Tourist attractions in Borovany and its surroundings

The town of Borovany

The town of Borovany is situated in the picturesque countryside of South Bohemia. Although this is a small town, you will find interesting historic attractions here. The town can be found 15 km south of Trebon (Třeboň). The dominant building of Borovany is the baroque Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The town square is bordered by a castle, the Town Hall, done in South Bohemian baroque style, and farmsteads from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Augustian Monastery in Borovany

The original Augustinian Monastery in Borovany was built in the late gothic style during the second half of the 15th century. The monastery was seriously damaged during the Thirty Years' War and subsequent baroque reconstruction changed its original appearance. The monastery was restored to its original gothic appearance between 2001 and 2002.

Guided tours of Museum in the Augustinian Monastery include a visit to the church, an exhibit about the history of the monastery and an exposition of baroque statues. The museum is open from July to August daily, except Mondays, (9.00 – 17.00). You can find more information in English and German on the official website of the town of Borovany.

Open-air Museum of the Iron Curtain

This open-air exhibit is a private museum. The exposition recalls the recent history of the Czech borders. Here you can see a border watchtower, barricades, boundary stones, etc. The museum presents the history of our borders from 1918 to 1990.
The open-air museum of the Iron Curtain is a part of an educational walking trail entitled “Totalitarianism Divides – Democracy connects”. This is a 6 km circular route, which starts at the train station in Borovany. You can see small border bunkers from 1936 – 1938 on this trail.
